Celebrating 125 Years of Swiss Mountain Guiding in Western Canada

For some members of the ACC community the influence Swiss mountain guides had on mountain culture in Canada is well know. For others, the Swiss impact may be less clear, with a vague thought of Swiss style chalets and ski instruction. I recently had the privilege of attending the 125th Anniversary of Swiss Mountains Guides in Western Canada, an event held in Golden, B.C. and organized by the Swiss Edelweiss Village Association and Golden BC Read more…

Wheeler Hut – Easter – Trip report

Submitted by:  Jean-Olivier Berger I’d like to start by apologizing about the fact that we had to turn so many people away, we had an excess of interested people but could not fit everyone in. The next few lines will not help my case… we had a BLAST! The kids had a wonderful time with hours of playing in the snow and coming back in the hut because their clothes could not soak up anymore Read more…

Trip Report: February 18-21 Lake Louise-area Nordic Touring

Seven ACCers converged on the Lake Louise area for a long weekend of backcountry Nordic day tours February 19th, 20th, and 21st. Three potential new converts to the free-heel fraternity joined this trip, taking advantage of the club’s loaner avy gear and finding that Wilson Mountain Sports in Lake Louise rents backcountry Nordic skis and skins. Trip Report: AST 2 : 6-7-8-9 Jan 2022

6 of us spent our first day in the Canmore legion refreshing our AST 1 base knowledge of the snow theory and adding new skills to become independant and competent decision makers in avalanche terrain. Despite all this fresh snow, we found no trace Read more…

Trip Report: Intro to Winter Camping: 22-23 Jan 2022

We wanted to run an introduction to winter camping to provide the opportunity for new participants to continue camping all year long. We first conducted one evening of virtual training to bring everyone up to speed and to allow the group to share some best practices from everyone else. Despite the challenge of virtual training we acheived our objectives and convinced most of the virtual participants to participate in the actual camping day (funny how Read more…

Trip Report: Cameron Lakes Nordic Touring, 14-17 January 2022

From Tuesday afternoon through Friday morning we waited anxiously for news: would Akamina Parkway be open? Closed Monday due to avalanche danger, the Parkway is the route from Waterton townsite to the Little Prairie parking area – and the difference between our planned 3 km ski in to the Cameron Lake hut and an 18 km hike carrying skis. Eight intrepid Nordic touring skiers watched SpotWx.com, Avalanche.ca, and email updates from the helpful Parks staff as the Read more…
