Are you a competent hiker looking to expand your possibilities? Or a sport climber looking to gain confidence moving in un-roped terrain? Under the direction of the Alpine Club of Canada Edmonton Section, this combined lecture-field trip aims to introduce participants to scrambling, a poorly-defined sport which involves aspects of hiking, mountaineering, and climbing in the pursuit of summiting peaks without the use of ropes and other technical gear.

The volunteer-led weekend will focus on getting participants comfortable moving safely and efficiently in mountain terrain, while taking opportunities to provide tips in route finding, hazard management, and scrambling technique. We will camp at Grey Jay Group Camping near Canmore, splitting off into smaller groups during the day to ascend peaks of easy to moderate difficulty. Upon completion, participants should achieve the necessary skills and confidence to participate in easy to moderate scrambling trips lead by volunteers from the Alpine Club of Canada or University of Alberta Outdoors Club.
