Each year, the Don Forest Service Award recognizes Alpine Club of Canada members who have provided significant service to their section through volunteerism, leadership, and dedication to the Club’s mission.
This year, we are proud to announce that three members of the Edmonton Section received this prestigious recognition for their outstanding contributions:
Michele Eickholt has been keeping the board organized as your section administrator (since 2018!) and keeps members moving as a nordic touring trip organizer. Beyond that, her keen interest in recovering, maintaining, and safekeeping historical section documents, records, and photos has been invaluable to members.

Martin Schwangler served on the Edmonton section board for 4 years as section safety chair (2020 to 2024), is engaged with section socials, and has contributed to a variety of training courses including as a ski mentor in the backcountry riders mentorship program from 2017-2020.

Jarett Stastny serves as your Edmonton section chair since April 2024, and previously as social chair role since 2019. He is a regular trip organizer for skiing and hiking trips within the section.

Congratulations to this year’s award winners and heartfelt thanks to all our volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to making our section thrive.
We had the pleasure of celebrating these accomplishments at our Annual Volunteer Appreciation BBQ at the Strathcona Community League on October 22, where members gathered for food, fun, and community.
Your continued support through organizing trips, helping with socials, or sharing your mountain passion keeps the Edmonton Section strong. Thank you!
