We wanted to run an introduction to winter camping to provide the opportunity for new participants to continue camping all year long.
We first conducted one evening of virtual training to bring everyone up to speed and to allow the group to share some best practices from everyone else. Despite the challenge of virtual training we acheived our objectives and convinced most of the virtual participants to participate in the actual camping day (funny how 5 years old are way easier to convince to go camping in the winter than teen-monster…).
9 of us, including 4 kids, met in Elk Island National Park on Saturday afternoon. The walkin campsites were quite busy for January but we found suitable sites near the cooking shelter.
We spend most of the rest of the day setting up camp, playing in the snow, talking about everyones gear, tryling new stove, testing various flameless fire-starting devices and sharing food and recipe that work well in this weather.
After a good and filling supper and required grilling of food over the fire, we went for a hike to burnt of some steam before heading to bed. Thanks to the mild temperature, it was not hard to stay warm that night and we woke up the next day ready to roll.
Mother nature decided to rain on us mid Sunday morning which was our cue to pack up and head home to reload for our next adventure.
We discussed having a part 2 of this introduction in a more remote area but we have yet to pick the next venue!
Stay warm, dry but have fun and get outside with your family and friends!
