If you’ve found yourself faffing about on moderate ground, trying to figure out how to get up it faster, you’re not alone.  On many of the Rockies’ classic alpine routes, moderate terrain makes up the majority of the ground travelled, and this terrain can be the bane of many a climber.  This course will help you move up long routes with ease, and be back at the trailhead comfortably in time for happy hour.

The focus will be on short roping, terrain belays and quick, simple anchors.  This course will also go over what equipment is necessary (hint: it’s less than you might think), and how to keep your pack light!  If you’ve got aspirations of routes like Edith Cavell’s East Ridge, Fryatt’s West Ridge, Mt. Abraham’s Shoulder Route, or anything similar, then this course is right up your alley.

Interested?  Of course you are.  Here are some skills you’ll need before the course:

  • You’ve seconded several rock or ice climbs.
  • You’ve done a handful of scrambles, and feel comfortable on that type of terrain.
  • You have good fitness, and don’t find yourself struggling to keep up with others on long days.
  • You can tie all these knots: Figure-8, Clove Hitch, Prusik, Italian Hitch (Munter).

Course Location & Dates

This course will be based out of Jasper, Alberta.  The dates are June 23-24, 2018.

Course Fees

We run our courses at cost, and this one comes in at $300 (plus an online processing fee).  That gets you two days of professional instruction, a reduced ratio (four students to one instructor), and a wealth of knowledge that will help you get up the big routes this summer.  Your accommodation and travel costs are your own responsibility, but we will have group camping available for these dates, and we will help you arrange a carpool with the other students.  Win-win!

You’ll also be responsible for coming prepared for the course with your own climbing equipment.  Your instructor will get in touch with a detailed list of gear prior to the course.  If you have questions about this, don’t hesitate to ask!

About the Instructor…

Your instructor will be Cyril Shokoples, a renowned ACMG/IFMGA Mountain Guide.  Cyril has spent a good portion of his career teaching skills like those in this course.  He’s a wealth of knowledge, and knows how to make complicated terrain quick to move through.  You’ll be in great hands for this course.

The fine print

Edmonton Section courses are run on a cost-recovery model.  This means that we provide courses at a pretty darn good price, but it also means that we are unable to provide refunds if you need to bail.  If you need to cancel for any reason, we will do our best to help you re-sell your spot.  Never the less, we do recommend that you consider purchasing insurance if the prospect of losing the course fees is unpalatable to you.

Not sure where to get insurance?  The ACC actually sells some!  Link here!
