This page features long-form stories and historical accounts that stretch across decades, weaving together the experiences, places, and people that shaped the Edmonton Section of the Alpine Club of Canada.

1. A day to remember: last climb

Don Campbell (1920 – 2002) was a long time member of the Edmonton section, joining the Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) at sixteen. He worked in Lake Louise when he was nineteen and climbed Mt. Hector, Mt. Temple, Mt. Weed, Mt. Fairview, and Devil’s Thumb the summer of 1940. He was drawn to Mt Victoria, memorizing the mountain’s details, but did not have an opportunity to climb the 3464 metre height that year. The years passed – he went to university, was in the army, started work and married. Once he had the time he returned to climbing, but a shoulder separation limited his activities to hiking and skiing. He continued to dream of Mount Victoria, though, and thirty years later, in 1970 he finally fulfilled his dream.
