6 of us spent our first day in the Canmore legion refreshing our AST 1 base knowledge of the snow theory and adding new skills to become independant and competent decision makers in avalanche terrain.

Day two was spent in Kananaskis Country, climbing up into Sentinel Bowl to reach Purple Pass where we found waist deep snow. Apparently this was a rare occurrence in the Rockies. Despite all this fresh snow, we found no trace of snow instability and the way down was extensively proven.

The morning of day three was spent talking about the avalanche considerations for ice climbing, we then went into Fields to look at the many ‘’beer’’ ice falls along the highway and had some very interesting discussion on what was safe to climb and what was just hanging below a giant bowl waiting to come down. We concluded the day with some high angle avalanche rescue practices.

The last day was spent around Mosquito Creek to explore the skiable slopes. After digging a massive snow pit, it was concluded that the snow pack in the area was pretty thick and stable.

We did not hit the Grand Daddy couloir despite the beggeing of some trip members. We rather proceeded carefully down the avalanche path and made our way back for debrief and good byes.

Those 4 days of safe training, great learning experience, fun skiing and lets not forget full catered food was provide by Peak Stratagem.
